Datin Dr. Surguna Devi Muniandy graduated with BDS from University Malaya in 1987 and obtained her MSc from Queen Mary and Westfield College, University of London in 1999, MOrth Intercollegiate (RCS England and RCPS Glasgow) in 2000 and FDS from the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2001.
Additionally, she was privileged to have spent a year in a fixed term training (FTTA) post in both the Royal London Hospital and Whipps Cross Hospital, London between years 2000 and 2001 whereby she gained additional clinical exposure and training in the management of complex craniofacial and orthognathic cases as well as cleft and multidisciplinary cases under the guidance of senior consultants. In 2010, she was sponsored by MOH, Malaysia for a short-term advanced training in Management of OSA with Mandibular Advancement Devices at the Whipps Cross Hospital, London.
Since then, she has served as the sole Government Specialist Orthodontist in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah for several years and then as a Senior Consultant Orthodontist and head of orthodontic services in Selangor before she retired after a long public service spanning 30 years. Currently, she works as a Consultant Orthodontist in a major private hospital in Kuala Lumpur as well as a few private practices in Selangor on a sessional basis.
As an experienced orthodontist, she is proficient in the use of both fixed as well as removable appliances in the management of orthodontic problems. Her special interests include early orthodontics and the use of functional appliances in the interceptive management of severe facial skeletal problems in growing children and orthodontic management of children with cleft lip and palate and other craniofacial anomalies. She is also an expert in the management of patients with snoring and OSA using oral appliances. She has presented her research and clinical experience in these topics in various local as well as international conferences and has co-authored a chapter on Cleft Lip and Palate in the textbook “Paediatric Dentistry” by Prof Shoba Tandon (Vol.2, 3rd edition, Paras Medical Publisher; 2018).
